Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Archive for February 20th, 2010

Realization.

I’ve noticed that race is a common central topic around which I have discussed lately. Issues regarding race have become a lot more noticeable since beginning this class. I, personally, feel like racism prohibits many people from reaching their highest potential, whether it be in the work place, or with personal relationships. Many people in our society preach that all races should be treated equal, that we should accept each others differences, and appreciate those differences. Yet, at the same time, we contradict those beliefs by segregating ourselves. One major example is television channels, BET which is exclusively for black entertainment, and Telemundo, for Hispanic entertainment. By having exclusive channels targeting a specific ethnicity, or race, we only define the racial divide further. We may justify that there are no other networks airing Hispanic, or black, entertainment, so those channels come in use; however, with those justifications, we are only further justifying the underlying issue, segregation.

Republican Party or Anti-Obama party?

with one comment

After catching some of the recaps of the Republican Party convention I had to take a step back and actually mentally process everything that was going on there. Every clip they showed on CNN was a clip of a member of the Republican Party bashing Barack Obama. In earlier years, the Republican Party actually stood for something, and actually had a political ground to speak on, but nowadays, it just seems like a mess. John McCain called Barack Obama a one-term President, and one of the younger members of the party called Obama a jackass. I am not calling anyone racist, but why are they more concerned about getting Obama out of the White House, than addressing real issues? There has got to be something behind all the insults and smart remarks that they throw at him. There were stickers, pins, and shirts of all kinds disrespecting Barack Obama, and not one time did I see a campaign t-shirt for the next Republican candidates for 2012, or even a shirt with REPUBLICAN PARTY written on it. It’s a shame that people could obsess over the wrong things, for all the wrong reasons. I have nothing against republicans, and I am not into politics; I am just stating the obvious. I know about “mud-slinging” in political races, but this is way past “mud-slinging”. If it’s not evident to the world that the Republican Party is more obsessed with Obama being a black President than Obama actually being President, than I don’t know what else to say.

KKK Meeting

with 5 comments

In Nahunta, Georgia the Ku Klux Klan is planning on gathering for a meeting. Many Georgia residents, including the NAACP who are planning to hold a “unity rally” near the KKK’s meeting, are not happy about this. Klan leaders say they are holding the rally to raise public awareness on illegal immigration, school prayer, sex offenders and other issues. The Klan is known as a racist, anti-Semitic and extremist group who targeted African Americans and killed them. I understand that freedom of speech is a right in this country but if this meeting is about attacking African Americans they should not be allowed to meet especially since planning to kill members of society is against the law. We as a nation are striving for equality for all and we don’t need to take any steps backwards. If they actually plan on talking about other public issues like sex offenders they should at least change the name of the group since the name “KKK” is associated with racism and horrible acts against African Americans.

I AM TIRED OF SG POLITICAL PARTIES

leave a comment »

When I was in American Government, sophmore year of high school I was introduced to the Federalist papers which suggested that Factions were a terrible thing in government, this being from one of the major founding fathers James Madison. However thats exactly what happened, our country became a two party system seen today as the Democrats and the Republicans. The same can be said for the Student Government here, a practice that I am highly against. To me Student Government is a group of boys and girls that want to dress up and play grown up with our money. You can see how incredibly immature they are especially in our last escapade in which someone equated the Student Alliance party to the Nazi party, this is just outrageous. Besides this millions in student fees over the years has been mismanaged, and the excellent example would be the Reitz Union, where no money has ever been put away for emergencies that they are now claiming is neccessary for the demolization of the entire union. It is this same sillyness that leads to tensions, it is this sillyness that has helped spur race tensions as well in our own society it is an underlying cause.

covered with tattoos

with 6 comments

I remember when I was on the bus and I heard two girls, all in my ear, talking about guys and their tattoos. One of the girls said that it is so ghetto and unattractive to see a guy covered in tats. These girls kept going on and on and on about this topic.

Having full body tattoos does not mean you are ghetto. These tattoo lovers only want to be different from other people so they are marking themselves in a colorful way. In my opinion, tattoos can be compared to beautiful artwork. Someone covered in tattoos maybe ugly to some people but they can be attractive for others. “What is hell for some is heaven to others” .

‘Epic Beard Man’

leave a comment »

I’m not sure if any of you have seen the video, but about a week or so ago there was two men on a public transportation bus who got into an argument. There was so much yelling back and forth that I couldn’t really understand for myself what they were arguing about, but supposedly it had something to do with the African American male calling the older Caucasian male a racist. In order to prevent things from going any further, the Caucasian man moved to the front of the bus. The other male, who was apparently drunk, followed him and preceded to punch him. Surprisingly to many viewers, the much older Caucasian male was more than capable of defending himself, and ended up beating the crap out of the other guy. Although many people found this incredibly funny, I’m worried that this is going to bring many negative repercussions on terms of race. The question is who will be looked at as the offender, and who as the victim.

Man angry at IRS

with 2 comments

Today in class we talked about the guy that flew his plane into the IRS building. I really found it interesting how most of the media did not want to call him a terrorist or a suicide bomber. The media is the first to put negative things out there but yet when it comes to a white American there’s no big outrage about it. It really makes me mad how there is a double standard when it comes to these situations. A terrorist is a person who instills fear into people and he wanted to kill these  people and make a point, whether it was for religious or political reasons this guy is a terrorist. Yes, there are white Americans that can be terrorist not just Muslims can be terrorist or people who are not citizens. It really makes me mad that it’s so easy for them to  label any crazy act by a Muslim or even if they look like a Muslim (what ever that means) they are automatically a potential terrorist, but when a white person does it they avoid even using the word.
