When do we start seeing color?

with 4 comments

So I went and visited the Kindergarten class where I did my internship today. The class is learning about black history and slavery. They read a book about slavery and how the blacks were trying to escape to freedom. One of the boys in the class raised there hand and said “So that would be like if ____ was really black (he is in fact African American) and if there really were white people who were mean and put him in jail. It wouldn’t be very nice.”
Its just amazing to see that he wasn’t pointing him out as actually being black. These kids don’t see color at such a young age. It was definately interesting to see how into the story they were and what they thought about what was happening in it at such a young age.

It got me wondering if we actually were all once like this and if we were, at what point did we lose our ability to be colorblind?

Skin Tone

with 4 comments

Recently i was watching a talk show and the show was about people who had problems with the way that they look. There was this nine years old girl old there and she was African-American with a brown skin tone. The one thing that she said she hated most about herself was his skin tone becasue she felt as if she was too dark. She talked about throwing away her black barbies and only playing with the light-skinned ones because she felt as if the dark barbies were too ugly. She described the troubles she had at school with her friends who would make comments on her skin tone and how much she envied another girl who was light-skinned becasue she would get compliments from boys. It was sad to see that this nine year old girl had come to the conclusion that she was ugly becasue of her skin tone. She would cry to her mother anhd her mother would try to console her but she would feel the emotional pain to because when she was her daughters age she went through the same thing. It is sad to see things like this and to see that this racial division is occuring at such a young age.
