A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Skin Tone

with 4 comments

Recently i was watching a talk show and the show was about people who had problems with the way that they look. There was this nine years old girl old there and she was African-American with a brown skin tone. The one thing that she said she hated most about herself was his skin tone becasue she felt as if she was too dark. She talked about throwing away her black barbies and only playing with the light-skinned ones because she felt as if the dark barbies were too ugly. She described the troubles she had at school with her friends who would make comments on her skin tone and how much she envied another girl who was light-skinned becasue she would get compliments from boys. It was sad to see that this nine year old girl had come to the conclusion that she was ugly becasue of her skin tone. She would cry to her mother anhd her mother would try to console her but she would feel the emotional pain to because when she was her daughters age she went through the same thing. It is sad to see things like this and to see that this racial division is occuring at such a young age.

  1. I never really knew that other races had issues with their skin tone. Whites want to be darker and blacks want to be lighter. I guess there will always be issues with the way people look.

  2. It’s sad, because at nine years old, she should not even be thinking about such. I was treated the same way growing up. they say kids can be cruel but honestly, the whole world is like that and I hope when she gets older things really do change.

  3. I saw a video in my social psychology class that had to do with this same issue: black girls hating the darkness of their skin tone. These high school girls were interviewed about their self-confidence and I couldn’t believe how much these girls got down on themselves because of the darkness of their skin. One girl even asked her mom to pay for a medical procedure for a graduation gift, that would help to gradually lighten her skin! It’s sad that we’re so hung up on skin color, hue and tone but on that same note, there are girls in high school having the same issues with their body and self confidence based on their weight or imperfections with their teeth or hair.

  4. It is definitely sad to hear of such a young child being ashamed of her skin tone. On the other hand, I am White with blonde hair and I was definitely in situations where minorities would make fun of my light skin tone. They would pull my pigtails and I would get really upset. All I am trying to say is that this issue is not just present within minorities…I went through it too and I’m White.
