Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

KKK Meeting

with 5 comments

In Nahunta, Georgia the Ku Klux Klan is planning on gathering for a meeting. Many Georgia residents, including the NAACP who are planning to hold a “unity rally” near the KKK’s meeting, are not happy about this. Klan leaders say they are holding the rally to raise public awareness on illegal immigration, school prayer, sex offenders and other issues. The Klan is known as a racist, anti-Semitic and extremist group who targeted African Americans and killed them. I understand that freedom of speech is a right in this country but if this meeting is about attacking African Americans they should not be allowed to meet especially since planning to kill members of society is against the law. We as a nation are striving for equality for all and we don’t need to take any steps backwards. If they actually plan on talking about other public issues like sex offenders they should at least change the name of the group since the name “KKK” is associated with racism and horrible acts against African Americans.

  1. I think that is stupid how the KKK is meeting and say that they are meeting to talk about sex offenders and school prayer when it is obvious they are racist based upon their group. I feel like they are trying to hide behind why they really want to meet.

  2. Unfortunately, the KKK can state their topics of discussion, and even though those topics may not be their intent, no one can prove that. Especially, with the first amendment, there really is no way to prohibit the meeting. I largely disagree with the views of the KKK, which many individuals in our society do, but as you’ve said they are extremists, and they will hold true to that title. Especially, given the freedom of speech, they will, sadly, discuss what ever they choose to.

  3. I agree with you, the fact that these people are holding a KKK meeting should not be allowed. It doesn’t matter if they are going to be talking about these other things or not, the fact that the group was originally organized around something so horrible should not be allowed in itself.

  4. Oh my god I didn’t even know they existed still. Shouldn’t that be prohibited? I don’t think this country with all the issues it has withbracism and diavrimminarion! I hate when we are all talking and not actually taking action!

  5. As I started reading I was saying the same exact thing. If the social issues stated are what they plan to discuss, change the name. I’m sure although they plan to discuss those issues they still have historical practices of starting the meeting and ending the meeting. Some way or some how they will be chanting ” white power” by the end of it. If the group wants people to take them as agroup discussing things that plague the country there is no reason it should be called a kkk meeting. The thing is we joke about things like thee kkk as if it was something of the past but its not because that meeting is going to happen and its so apparent that Blacks are the only race who cares what they do because if it were the Black Panthers those memebers would have been arrested just for the THOUGHT of having a meeting. We live in a society that is STILL full of inequality.
