Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Being Latino in America

with 2 comments

Last week, most of the Hispanic organizations on campus held a two part viewing of a documentary called Latino in America. Most of my friends and I agreed that we didn’t really like it. My friend commented that it reinforced every negative stereotype about Latinos. For example, in the documentary most of the people they interviewed, were illegal aliens or immigrants, and most of the stories covered described hardships that immigrants and illegal aliens go through. Whatever happened to the more Americanized Latinos; the second and third generation Hispanics that are American born citizens. We represent a major part of the Latino population as well. There was one part where they showed a progressive, productive, predominantly Latino town, however, most of the young Latinos are portrayed in a negative light. For example, one teenage girl was always getting in trouble, and ended up getting pregnant, a teenage boy was also always getting in trouble and being very disrespectful to his parents. I just felt that this documentary could have been a lot better, I felt that for the most part it left out a whole population.

  1. I could not agree more. I don’t know why movies can’t be more neutral. It always takes sides of positive or negative.

  2. I did not see the show, however it seems that the main point is to address immigrant workers, which is not the same as saying Latinos in America. The documentary should change its title to “hardship of the immigrant workers. “
