Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

why are jews so cheap?

They’re not, that’s just a stereotype, which is what I’m gonna talk about. Someone’s blog about blacks in a commercial got me thinking, there are all kinds of stereotypes about pretty much any kind of race or ethnicity. I was wondering, where did they all come from? Do stereotypes have some truth in them? Are Jews really cheap? Do Mexicans cut lawn? Are African Americans thugs? How is it that something one person says gets believed and spread through many people? I think some stereotypes are true for a minimal percent of each race or ethnicity, but the problem arises when the entire race or ethnicity is assumed to be the stereotype. Will the time ever come when we don’t use them? or will stereotypes forever remain a reminder of the ignorance present in the world?

  1. I believe that people play into stereotypes. Instead of trying to break them, they would rather go along with the stereotype, which is seen as the norm for what ever race they may be.

  2. I think that a small amount of people possibly subscribe to a sterotype and it is the interactions of these people with others that causes the negative views, thats pretty much it

  3. I think that it does have to do with being able to associate at least a small part of the population to have certain traits attributed to them. People generally like to make their lives as easy as possible. If they can think of a whole population in a single way, then they are able eliminate a lot of the work in getting to know someone.

  4. I think this has something to do with what we learned about in class, public opinion. People hear something and they run with it. They dont care if its the truth or a lie, they want something to talk about. Society wants to associate some people with certain things and categorize them.
