Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

The WBC

with one comment

The Westboro Baptist Church is obviously ignorant, crazy, etc.  They scream and shout at dead soldiers’ funerals while condemning the United States for its acceptance of the LGBTQIAP community.  They are obviously all nuts and off kilter.  However, they have the right in this country to perform all of these rituals in public.  However, are funerals to be considered public?  I think that the WBC, or any other group, does not have the right to display this kind of hate speak outside of a funeral.  I recently read an article about the father of a dead Marine whose son’s funeral was the target of a WBC hate rally/protest.  He has since had terrible nightmares, psychological problems, and quite simply PTSD related symptoms caused by the WBC’s actions.  I believe that his right to mourn his dead son was violated by the WBC and that the legality of these protests should be eliminated.  He is currently heading an agenda to do just that, end these displays of hate outside of funerals.  An anti-subjectivist once said, “Your rights end where mine begin.”  I think this applies perfectly here.  As long as this church is permitted to act this way, they will continue to infringe on other peoples’ right to have a solemn, peaceful funeral in which to mourn their loved ones’ passing.

For those who are unaware: the WBC promotes hate rhetoric and condemns lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT), Roman Catholics, Muslims, and Jews. Although they are a hated sect by the Christian community, they consider themselves a holy Christian church.

  1. Wow, I did not know these people did this. I am a Christian and frankly I am ashamed that these people call themselves Christians when they display so much hatred and judgment towards people.
