Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

SYD 3700

It is the end of the semester and I’m glad I signed up for this class. Being a minority I have experienced racism first hand but taking this course gave me a different outlook on this issue. There were a lot of things such as residential segregation or racism in our system that I was not educated in and now I have a better understanding about the bigger issues in our society that we may never be able to tackle. A part of me also feels that taking this class opens my eyes and ears to a lot more racism that happens on a daily basis and it does get me mad and upset. Overall the important thing is that I walked away more educated on the subject and got to listen to different perspectives from students and the various books and articles we read in this class. I think everyone should take this class because apparently a lot of people need to learn the real issues on this subject.

  1. From taking syd 3700, I learned a lot more things about racism. I am happy its almost finally over. This experience was great. I would recommend this class to others becuause I also feel they need to learn more about the matter.

  2. I found this class also to be extremely educational as well. I learned a lot of common illogical missteps that many people take when arguing race or trying to understand race relations in the US. One thing I wish there was more of was a sober, smart conservative voice in the class. I am saying this because I feel that although we all learned a lot about the problems we face regarding racism and discrimination, there was little debate from the right. I really liked the fact that everyone was respectful when someone did present different ideas though. However, a more ideologically diverse class would have helped me gain insight into what the “other side” is really thinking.

  3. I would definitely recommend this class to just about anyone I know. I agree that the experience absolutely opened my eyes to situations in today’s world. Prior to taking this class I had no way to grasp just how serious certain aspects of minority life in America are today but now that I’ve had this experience I can say I’m one step closer to understanding.
