Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

This semester and this class has allowed me to gain more knowledge about the subject of racism in America in addition reaffirming some of things I already know. When thinking about said subject we must not be scared to discuss it with others and give voice to this issue that is still very much alive. We can not rely on others to make a difference much like we can not expect things to change over night. However, what we can do is change the small things in our own lives, becoming educated on the subject (like we have begun to do so this semester), and open our minds to possibilities and people that we would not usually consider. Everyone should be on an equal playing field, even if that means some affirmative action is necessary. People should not be made to feel as if they need to work harder to prove themselves and prove they deserve to hold certain positions. Everyone should be held equally accountable for their actions. This class was very helpful and I know I will continue to learn about the subject, while hoping that others decide to take this class and welcome new ideas as well.

  1. I agree. This class has been more than just a diversity credit. It has stretched our capacity to think and discuss race in new ways. We have learned about the power of white privilege and that it can be used to be an ally of minorities. This class has also taken away the stigma of affirmative action. It is not in place to give unqualified minorities a chance but it is a way to ensure that minorities who have worked just as hard are not overlooked. I think classes such as this are the first step to becoming a society that is open-minded and aware of all races.
