Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Affirmative Action=Equality

with 3 comments

In some of the earlier readings in class we learned about affirmative action as reverse discrimination. I believe that affirmative action has raised so much controversy because it is a way for minorities to be seen as equal to whites. Historically, and still recently in some instances, white was seen as the superior race and now that minorities are given the opportunity to climb the social ladder and even things out society finds a way to stop it. People have always been afraid of change and the mere idea of minorities having the same privileges as whites is a huge change that I believe Americans may not be ready to accept.

  1. I agree, white people tend to complain that affirmative action gives blacks unearned privileges but they fail to realize they themselves have privileges that were just handed to them. Black people still have to work twice as hard in order to succeed even though affirmative action is in place. I feel that affirmative action is good because it can help level the playing field.

  2. I am glad we have talked more about it in this class. It truly is a big issues and causes so much tension between people. I see however that without it the way the U.S would have looked like today will be the same as the days of segregation.

  3. I feel that those who believe that affirmative action is reverse discrimination don’t really understand how affirmative action operates
