Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

A club for whites only

I have a online course in Jazz history, wonderful course. We learned about how the cotton club helped African Americans to gain popularity. Amazing how African Americans could play at the club, but were not allowed to sit down and enjoy the show. When a black entertainer entered the place, they entered through back doorways and weren’t allowed to use the same bathroom as whites. Pictures of Cotton decorated the walls with memories of slavery. The music played at the cotton club was called jungle music (I wonder where that idea came from). All though the club helped some blacks gain more popularity, it also created a state of embarrassment, and to whites it was just a simple entertainment. Many whites at this time believed that entertainment was all blacks were good at anyway.
