Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

racism is sports

with 2 comments

I found an article online that talked about racism in sports. Specifically it was a girl talking about her experience on the soccer field of the opposing team yelling out racial slurs to her and her teammates. Unfortunately this doesn’t surprise me. Being a soccer player I have not only experienced this before, but also have heard stories from other teams like this. It also reminds me of the movie “Bend it like Beckham,” where the main character Jessminder is called a Paki by the opposing team and starts fighting, in turn recieving a red card. She wasn’t just upset by the racial slur, but also at the fact that she wasn’t Pakistanian, but Punjabi Indian. I think that coaches, teammates, as well as refs shouldn’t allows this behavior. I think that coaches, teammates, and officials who allow this behavior or just as bad if not worse. Be part of the solution, not the problem!

  1. I totaly agree There is a heck of alot of racism in sports and i do believe more comes from the coach than the opposing team.

  2. Unfortunately, this does happen in all sports and it’s really sad. Sports leagues spend so much time advocating sportsmanship and they don’t bother to punish people for that kind of behavior. I believe it should be the coach’s job to educate their players and teach them that this kind of behavior is simply unacceptable.
