Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Me and my friend were watching tv and a promo for American Gangster starring Denzel Washington appeared during the commerical. I can’t remember what her exact comment was but it was to the effect that African-American actors are rewarded with awards for roles that show blacks in a negative light. For instance, Denzel plays a mean-spirited crooked cop and recieves a Best Actor award, Halle Berry’s character falls for a racist officer and then has a nude sex scene and she got a Best Actress and Monquie gets best supporting actress for playing a poor abusive mother. I kinda think she’s reaching, but i kinda do see a pattern.

  1. Im never sure what the Academy is thinking, this may infact be a pattern. However, both Halle Berry and Denzel Washington are probably some of the best actors in the field, why they don’t get Academy Awards for some of their other roles I don’t know. AS for Monquie, I have not seen Precious and do not know how good she is as an actress. But I could see your point that there is a pattern.

  2. Yea, if you see it that way then of course you will see a pattern. This is a pattern that happens to all ethnic groups . For example, that batman movie starring Heath Ledger. His character was a horrible mad man and he won awards like crazy.

In your examples, I noticed you listed top black actors. These people do outstanding jobs and are good at what they do. So why not get awarded for succeeding at their roles. This goes for any other actor ( black, white, Hispanic etc..) who kills a role. Congrats to them all!

Black actors get awarded for doing roles that are positive, so why not get awarded for the negative playing roles too?

    • Please don’t take it the wrong way. I’m not trying to sound mean or anything.

  3. I think part of the problem is the fact that these tend to be the most available roles for minority actors. At least the “good” roles that are likely to get nominated for awards. The only 2 winners that didn’t fall into this category that I can recall are Jamie Foxx for Ray, and Whoppie Goldberg (I know I butchered the spelling on her name) in Ghost, and that was for supporting acress if I recall correctly. I think it is a combination of African American Actors/Actresses being rewarded for playing characters that have negative stereotypes, and those being the only roles available that would win an award.

    • Forgot about Morgan Freeman in Million Dollar Baby and Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire. Though Cuba Goodings role for much of the movie played into the idea of a black man with a chip on his shoulder so it might fall somewhere more in the middle.
