Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Twitter post.

As I was reading my timeline the other day on Twitter, I came across someone’s post stating that “stereotypes are there for a reason”. Almost immediately, I thought of all the repetitive discussions we have had in class on this subject. I do believe that stereotypes, as do most statements or groupings of any sort, originate for some reason. However, why is it society’s nature to fall into that stereotype, instead of rather breaking it? We’ve become so accustomed to the norm of stereotypes that we don’t even think twice about what we’re doing, or what we say.

  1. Well I do agree with what you’re saying, but I don’t necessarily think that everyone just falls into place with what their stereotype says about them. Yes it is true with some people, but there are individuals who strive on trying to prove people wrong with their stereotypical assumptions.

  2. Stereotypes aren’t the problem. It’s people who believe in them and refuse to let other break the mold that society may have wrongfully put them in. Most stereotypes are true, but everyone deserves a fair chance.

  3. Because unfortunately stereotypes arise from a trend that a lot of people see. Stereotypes are typically negative in nature (there are a few, but very few, positive stereotypes) and people stick to them because they actually DO see the reinforcement of those stereotypes.

  4. Until we hold the media and each other accountable to dismiss stereotypes, they will be here to stay.

  5. Originate for some reason? A lot of things orignate for no reason. They just want to talk about soemthing. I am definetly going to prove all the stereoytpes about me are false.
