Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Ignorance can be at all ages, unfortunately.

This past week we had graduate students fill in to lecture during my psychology class since my professor was on vacation. On Monday there was one young lady who came in, who gave off the impression of being quite an intelligent individual. She seemed to be well educated, and actually have some common sense as well. However, at one point during lecture, she began talking about the census. Long story short, she than began the argument that labeling society by their race was necessary, and the same should be done when doing a research study. In her opinion, it was important to see which ‘races’ shared which characteristics. The fact of the matter is that there is much more variability among individuals in each ‘race’, and there is not nearly enough evidence to support any proposal that one race is more likely than another do look, act, or feel a certain way. In my view, her argument was completely ignorant and based off of false beliefs, and it was more than difficult to listen to her lecture after that.

  1. I do think that labeling people by their race, and then seeing if they share the same characteristics is crazy. We are now taught that everyone is the same, so why should sharing the same views as someone else from your race matter at all?

  2. I agree, I feel that we as a nation need to stop using race to label and compare everything. The only place that’s going to get us is back to the slavery days because people will start to believe that some races are better than other races all over again.

  3. ok there are two different things about this! 1. We are all people/humans! and that is the only label we should share or have! HOWEVER, “everyone is not the same.” 2. Every individual is a different world! We are all different from one another. We have different values, characteristics, weaknesses, etc. That is what makes us unique.

  4. I kind of agree with her. In class, a lot of people talk about the struggles on minorities and how they are raised and treated differencently. I think that this would play a role in a psychological study.

  5. Unfortunately, she does have a point. Whether we like it or not, each race really does share certain characteristics and ways of thinking simply because of the culture they come from. So it really is important to note the races of people. This is not only important to the researchers but also to the minorities being looked at. There are so many stereotypes out there and its these kinds of studies that make people see they’re not true.
