A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Confederate History Month

with 2 comments

Recently in Virgina, the governor declared April as Confederate History Month.  The month is an opportunity for the people of the state of Virginia to learn about their history and the path the sate chose that has led them to where they are now with a focus on the hard work and sacrifice of the people of Virginia.  This is not a glorification of the Confederacy, merely a history lesson on the role Virginia has played in the history of the United States.

But what would this be without people up in arms about it?  People are crying out that the governor and the Confederate History Month are showing their support of slavery.  The NAACP is publicly denouncing the governor’s decision to educate the people about a major part of their state’s history.  No where in his proclamation was slavery mentioned, his focus was on the political, economic, and military aspects of the Confederacy, not social policy like slavery.  In no way was this history lesson meant to be racially divisive.

  1. Lol, maybe we shouldn’t teach people about the Holocaust….it may be history but I guess since it’s a situation of social prejudice, we should just leave it out altogether.

  2. I think it is good that the governor wants to educate the people of his state. Just because the history might include something as horrible as slavery, does not mean that people should not be aware of its occurrence.
