Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

I hate white people

I know this seems like a long clip but if you fast forward to 4:10 that is the part I was most interested in. Over the weekend, I saw Freedom Writers. It was a great movie that describes racial tensions in Los Angeles. In this clip, Eva describes how much she hates white people. It was really sad to see this movie and see how much resentment minorities have against white people for deciding the respect that they deserve. Throughout the movie I felt that the minorities in the film thought that white people just get everything handed to them but these minorities had to live their lives in fear because of gang violence. The kids were fourteen and the hatred of other racial groups was already instilled in them.

  1. I feel that when young people have racist views, a lot of people bash those individuals without looking at the bigger picture. The majority of the time these views are instilled in them by older generations who feel that way and have taught their kids/grandkids to feel the same. That is why kids at even such young ages can hold such strong negative views against members of another race.

  2. At such a young age, children and teenagers alike believe what is taught to them. If the norm is for minorities to hold such a strong resentment towards whites for XYZ reason, they’re going to believe it, because it seems reasonable. When an individual is young, in a sense they are ignorant, they don’t want to see what’s happening as a greater whole, they would rather be selective and believe only what they choose to believe.
