Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

The 2010 Census Form

In the 2010 Census form, the description of certain races was too explicit in my opinion. As an African-American, I feel the word, “Negro”, was unnecessary when defining my race. That term is not accepted in the black community as a normal word to use for the fact it is extremely derogatory and offensive because of the history/ background of “Negro.” That terminology was a racist remark, expressed by whites to blacks, when racism was very open and existent. I really do not fathom how this was not considered racist before publishing the 2010 Census forms. I know racism still persists amongst individuals, but I do not understand how this racist slur was accepted on a national document.
