Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Today in class we read an article pertaining to why women are twice as likely to be depressed than men. The author of the article was a man who blamed the discrepancy on feminism. He stated that the feminist movement has caused women to be more emotionally liberated while men have been trained to control their emotions and feelings.  He also said that women are more likely to be happier if they have a “good” man in their life. I personally found the article to lack any real value. I believe women are more likely to be depressed because they are more likely to be responsible for taking care of the family as well as holding down a career. I don’t think that the presence of a “good” man will cause women to develop immunity to depression. Relationships have their ups and downs irrespective of the quality of the man. I believe this article portrays women to be emotional creatures who lack guidance and need a man to be their knight in shining armor. I also think that women are more likely to be diagnosed as depressed because they are more likely to go see a therapist and seek help. Men are conditioned to think that showing feelings and emotions is not masculine and are taught to channel them into sports or some other socially acceptable activity.
