Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Racism Dead ?

with 4 comments

I was in a class the other day and a white student said that she felt that racism is dead and that blacks are looking for racism. Hmm. I had to hold my tounge because I am black female who has only been living in the states for 3 years, and I have experienced numerous cases of racism that I wasn’t “looking for”. Everyday there are people getting turned away from jobs because of there color. I don’t blame this girl for her ignorance but I do think she is blind because if she would pay attention maybe she might see it.

  1. Unfortunately there are a lot of people like her, and its these who make progression difficult to achieve.

  2. There are a lot of people who hold the same view as that young lady. I don’t know anyone who would intentionally “look” to be discriminated against. That argument to me is nothing more than an excuse not to address the fact that racism is still present, it has just become institutionalized thus making it more discrete and harder to detect. We learned in class that there are many whites who grow up in a “white habitus” in which they grow up in an all white neighborhood, go to an all white school, and have all white friends. They literally live in a very sheltered world. Therefore, they really do have a hard time seeing and understanding that discrimination and racism are still prevalent.

  3. I used to accept the argument that this is just the “blissful ignorance” of the individual but I no longer do. If people wanted to know the truth they would look for it instead of casually dismissing it time and time again. It is not that these individuals don’t know, it’s that they choose not to know. Sure, some kids lead sheltered lives but most grow up and choose to continue on that same path with their blinders on ignoring everything going on around them. Personally, I am tired of accepting ignorance as an excuse.

  4. This is absolutely ridiculous! How can anyone say this? I think the media, especially politicians play a huge role in making the public believe this to be true. However, this student needs a wake up call. Racism is still very much alive and thriving.
