Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Black Barbie v White Barbie

with 5 comments

I just read an article that found that a Walmart was selling the black barbie for less than half the price as compared to the white barbie. When I read this I was shocked.  What kind of message are they trying to send children who take notice of these differences and will want to gravitate towards the most popular. It is wrong to mislead young girls who already have to deal with so many issues when it comes to beauty standards in America. This is absolutely wrong!

  1. Wow I cannot believe that Walmart is selling the black barbie for half the price of a white barbie. I agree with you, they are giving young girls the wrong idea about race when they should be teaching them that they are all the same.

  2. I also agree with you. Looks like to me they are basically saying the white dolls are worth more dollars comapared to the black dolls. Prices should not matter because a doll is a doll regardless of the skin color. They are giving away wrong message.

  3. I agree with you guys that selling a doll that is exactly the same minus skin color for much cheaper is wrong. Even if the more expensive, white barbie is more popular it does send the wrong message.

  4. They make it seem as though the white dolls are selling more than the black dolls, is this the case? I dont see how and why when there are black, mexican and other non white races out there who prefer to buy thier children darker dolls when one is available.

  5. I think this is being taken way out of proportion. Barbies are a piece of merchandise. If a piece of merchandise is not selling it goes on sale. Seriously that is all this is. I am so sick of political correctness and people seeing things that are not there.
