Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Commercials don’t portray real black women

with one comment

Recently I was listening to the radio and an African-American male was joking saying that commercials don’t portray real black women. I decided to go home and see if this was true and this actually is the case. The black women that are in commercials don’t exactly look like regular black women. They are mostly light skin and they have curly hair. These women are evidently mixed with another race because most pure black women have a darker skin tone and their hair is not curly. I wonder why this is?……

  1. I never really thought about that but it’s kind of true. I don’t want to generalize too much, but all of the commercials that come to mind do use Black women with lighter complexions.
