Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Race and Prisoners

with 5 comments

I was reading an article about Robert Perkinson, a professor of American studies at the University of Hawaii. He did a study about our prisons on the South. He found that America incarcerates its citizens about six times more than Britain and about seven times more than Canada. He relates this to race in that he found that African-Americans are seven times as likely to be locked up as whites, and African-American men today go to prison at twice the rate they go to college. He believes that America is moving from “the age of slavery to the age of incarceration.” If the studies he found about those young men is true it just goes to raise the question about discrimination in our prisons and if that has a profound impact on who gets incarcerated.

  1. Wow!!! Being African American myself I too will have to agree with the writer… I think there are too many African American males in prison. I there are those that are accused for the right reasons, but there are also some that are wrongfully accused. I must have to wonder aslo, are they really wrongfully accused or is it discrimination?? I never really thought about it that way…

  2. I’ve done a bit of reading on this myself. The massive number of prisons that are in this country could not operate if they didn’t have the prisoners to keep them operating. Things like “the war on drugs” are often times thought to be an excuse to fill prison cells to keep the prisons profiting(at least when the arrests are marajuania or alcohol related).

  3. I don’t know how the judiciary system works and if there is a jury or not for many cases that decide whether someone get incarcerated or not, but the fact of the matter is that its true and there are more African Americans in jail. If they are jury based I’m not sure if they are allowed to have blacks in the jury because it will be biased but then if they have all whites in a jury it is also biased.

  4. I believe this to be true because once a stereo type is in place such as african american males have a high crime rate due to drug related and such is hard to break that mold. With trhe stereo type in place i believe it gives the system more of a reason to incarcinate more african americans

  5. Never really thought of it the way the author put it “the age of slavery to the age of incarceration.” but I do believe what the author says. There are way too many people incarcerated and a lot of them are African Americans. Even though our criminal justice system shouldn’t be bias it is hard to avoid biases in every level of the justice system.
