Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Concert

with 3 comments

My hometown is what you would consider to be the conservative south and last week there was an uproar concerning a concert that some of the teenage girls wanted to attend.   The concert that they wanted to go to was a rap artist whom is black.  Some of the adults in my town thought it was unwise that they go to this concert.  Granted, the concert was at night on a weekday,  so maybe that is why they didn’t want them to attend.  But, I know that these girls have attended country concerts where the artists are mainly white, and there was no controversy concerning those concerts.  You would think that race would not matter when you are attending a concert, that it would only matter if you liked that certain style and type of music, but these adults think otherwise.  I’m not sure if the adults didn’t want them to go because of the race of the artist, but it is interesting that they did not make a big deal about the country concert.

  1. The fact that you mentioned that those kids were allowed to go to country concerts with no problem makes this sound more of a race thing. I don’t think these adults would think that it is unwise for those kids not to go to the concert solely on the fact that it was on a weekday.

  2. I agree. I think the adults did not want the kids to go because of the race of the artist. They probably assumed that because the artist was black that for some reason it was going to be unsafe because of the style of music.

  3. Yea, i think so too, their parents didn’t want them to go because the artist were black. But another thing to think about is that there is a negative stigma associated with rap/ hip-hop music, and some people just want to completely block out he whole genre or music because of that.
