A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Racialization of the Health Care Debate

with one comment

As we heard in class today, protesters were screaming racial slurs as people entered to vote on the Health Care reform bill. I feel that this shows what the majority of “teabaggers” were actually so enraged about. I can understand why some might dislike a more socialized health care system, but the fact of the matter is that the bill is pretty moderate, and there was something else that has them ticked off. What many conservatives have truly been upset over is that a black man is in the white house, and they don’t want him to get anything done while he’s there apparently. What was almost equally distrurbing was the conservative media’s coverage and response to the incidents. They barely mentioned it, and when they did, they said it was overblown and that Republican leaders shouldn’t address it because it is a “non-issue.” If conservatives don’t begin to realize how out of touch they are with the civilized world, they will continue to lose on the big issues. I don’t feel like they’re doing nearly enough to distance themsleves from the nuts that have been on display over the last few days. If they don’t begin speaking out, it will seem like they agree with their behavior.

  1. Bottom line is, nothing was being done. A lot of people are not insured and the health care system is messed up. Are people mad at the idea that Obama is actually doing something about it instead of just talking about it and he was the first to actually complete the plan? Or do they hate the idea of the bill regardless? Would this issue be suh a controversy if a white man signed the bill?
