Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Don’t give up

with one comment

I recently had a conversation with my mother about people looking down on minorities when they can not speak english properly. My mother is dominican but has been living in the U.S for many years. She is a nurse that works for hospice. We were at a restaurant and my mother had said something incorrectly and I corrected her on it. She told me that a lot of times at work or when ever she goes out she feels that people look down on her or make fun of her because her english is not perfect and this makes her feel horrible. Even though my mom is a nurse that works for hospice, which it takes a unique person to work for hospice she feels that people don’t acknowledge her hard work and the honorable career she has. It really makes me feel bad to know that she has to go through this. Until you have gone through this you can never know how it feels to be look down on and for someone to think they are better than you. Her friend that was eating with us made a very good point, she said that my mother should feel good about herself because she accounts for two people. No matter how bad my moms english is she accounts for two people she can help someone in need in english and someone who is spanish that doesn’t know english. Anyone out there who is learning how to speak english, do not feel ashamed on how incorrect you may be, the point is that you’re trying and you know more languages than the person who only knows one.

  1. I completely agree, considering that certain races are looked upon negatively when these should really be praised due to their abilities.
