Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

with 3 comments

I just read an article about a 16 year old boy who got on the courtesy phones at a Walmart in New Jersey and made an announcement telling all the black people in the store to leave.  Police have the kid in custody and he is facing charges and sentencing.

Personally, I think that this kid is ridiculous; he is claiming the whole thing was a prank and bragged about it on his facebook page.  Prank or not, these kind of actions further widen racial gaps and just make the country seem more racist in general.  I know that even being white, this kind of thing upsets me that someone would even think to do something like that.  It’s not funny and it just hurts any progress that has been made in the past.

  1. I just finished reading about it too. I was aware of it before they made an arrest and we had talked about it in class. I agree, this does everything but help racism. I don’t believe people think straight when they say things like that and if they do think straight, that says something else altogether that does even less to help.

  2. I completely agree with you. This stunt is ridiculous and his ignorance to the seriousness of his actions make it worst. He may have seemed fun at the time but I’m guessing he will think twice before ever doing something like that again. Pranks like these only take society right back to where we started centuries ago.

  3. I’m glad he got arrested and is getting charged because his action is just ridiculous and ignorant. I don’t know what would make him think that this was considered a joke or a prank. It is so wrong that people find this funny. It just shows how racism is still going on.
