Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Walmart Incident

with 5 comments

Recently at a Walmart in New Jersey someone got onto the intercom and announced through the store for all black people to leave. After the comment was made the manager got onto the comment and immediately tried to clear up the comment and tell blacks to disregard the comment. Many blacks in the store and within the community were outraged and thought the comment was very disrespectful and hurtful. Some said that they didn’t think that they could ever come back to the store after a comment like that. Although the comment may have been a joke there was no place for a joke like that. Offensive comments such as that one can be very negative especially when we as a society are still trying to move past the racial discrimination of the past. When young children here things like this it can place a permanent influence on them that can affect their judgment throughout life. It was also said that this wasn’t the first incident that was race related to Walmart. There have been several other incidents of blacks being mistreated, and racial discrimination in their hiring of truck drivers. The 17.5 million dollar lawsuit against Walmart for the discrimination in hiring put a black eye on the retailer. Incidents such as these won’t completely bring down the Walmart chain but it definitely hurts their reputation.

  1. I just read an article talking about this incident. I can not believe that this actually happened. Shoppers, especially black shoppers, must have been appalled after hearing the announcement. It is so sad that someone would do this, even if it was not done with malignant intentions.

  2. Wow, I can’t believe someone would so ignorant as to make a comment like that. I really hope that person was fired because not only did they insult a lot of people but they also caused Walmart to lose some customers.

  3. I cannot believe that someone would make such a rude comment over a store intercom. First of all, it is very immature that someone would stoop to that level to cause someone else to feel unwelcome in a store. Maybe the person thought they were being funny, but no one is laughing.

  4. I feel like people are taking making racists comments as jokes. They fail to realize that they are hurting people’s feelings. Race is a very sensitive topic especially in a country where blacks were segregated and discriminated against. People need to be more considerate of the feelings of others.

  5. If I was in the store at the time I woudlnt know if I would be more humiliated or angry. Even if this was a joke I wouldnt take it as one. To say something like this on the intercom for everyone to hear is down right wrong; not funny at all.
