Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

UCSD racial incident sparks rage

Minority students at the University of California San Diego declared a racial state of emergency yesterday. Students were already upset by an off-campus party Monday that mocked Black History Month, that this latest incident put students over.  Members of an irreverent student organization aired a live segment on closed-circuit television Thursday night supporting the off-campus party, which occurred on Monday.  About 200 students, mostly black, met yesterday with administrators to discuss four pages of demands, mostly aimed at improving the campus’ racial climate.  Many students were in tears and upset, telling the administration at UCSD that they need to realize how deep racial tensions are on campus.

This article blows my mind.  How can any college campus let something like this get so out of hand.  We’re in the year 2010, and were still allowing racism to occur so freely in a public school.  I hope that UCSD is taking appropriate action and disciplining the appropriate people.  Sometimes we need to make an example of one group so no others think it is alright to do it the next time.

  1. Thats really good that these students aren’t taking matters into their own hand or just brushing it off. They are handeling it as adults and in a very professional way. Im really glad that it wasnt a riot because it would only flare up racial stereotypes and keep the racial tensions there. As far as the institution goes I hope they pay attention to the four page demands.

  2. It is good to see that action is finally is being took in this situation because from reading the article things were beginning to get out of hand. This is how race riots start and im glad that the situation was handled in a decent manner. This situation just shows the ignorance of some people and how deeply rooted race still is in our country. In order to begin to fix the situation of race in America we must first acknowledge that it still exist and stop acting like it was a thing of the past.

  3. The problem is that institutions tend to wait until the situation is extreme before taking proper action. While these events may seem sudden and sporadic, they obviously reflect attitudes that have been brewing for a long time. Because it is obvious where racist attitudes can lead, actions need to be taken when minority students say they feel there are racial issues, even when there isn’t this type of “concrete” proof that it exists (yet). Brushing it off says that these tensions are just a figment of their imagination or a result of the “hypersensitivity” minorities have.
