Unequal Opportunities and Whitewashed Resumes

Many people tend to think that affirmative action is doing more harm than good, and that when it comes to hiring a candidate for a job, the most qualified person will get the job. That is definitely not the case. After reading an article entitled, Unequal Opportunity and Whitewashed Resumes, I discovered that Black men with college degrees have nearly twice the unemployment rate, 8.4 percent vs. 4.4 percent, of their white male counterparts. Another shocking fact is that results from two research studies conducted in 2004 and 2005 in Milwaukee and New York, found that white men with a criminal record were more likely to get a job than black men with a squeaky clean past. Also, Black job applicants “whitewashed” their resumes, by removing anything from their resume that might connect them to being Black, such as minority fraternities, honor societies, etc. This just goes to show that race is a factor when it comes to hiring someone for a job.

  1. That is just ashame that they must “white wash” their resumes. They should be proud of where they came from and what they have accomplished, especially fraternities or sororites. Men and women work hard to become a part of those organizations and should be proud of it, and should be forced to hide it.

  2. Well thats the world we live in. I also learned about those statistics last year and its very unfair. To add on they not only have no criminal background but a higher degree than their white counterpart and still will not get the job. The individuals arent ashamed of anything, they just know how to swallow pride and seek a career in white America. They will always be a part of the Greek organization they know that and so do others but their employees dont need to know that. I feel its a great strategy to atleast get an interview becuase without that you would be cheated do to something so small. Its an option to either be prideful and lose the opportunity at 4-6 figures or suck it up and get a chance to show your more than just an black person because clearly the race still has to constantly proving themselves. I wouldnt call it whitewashing the resume though. More towards standardizing it.
