Nappy Hair
I was on the bus one day and heard these two girls having a conversation. A white guy with dreads was on the bus and I heard them say to each other, why does that guy want to have nappy hair like a black person. This really made me upset because even though Black people are usually the ones with dreads it does not make their hair nappy. In fact there is no such thing as nappy hair. Black hair is extremely curly and that is what people fail to understand, so they label it as nappy hair. People need to try to be more informed about hair textures and styles.

I have said before that I have had nappy hair, but was corrected by teammate who pointed out her hair, which she considered nappy. What is the correct definition of nappy hair anyway? I think if i asked around i would get different answers, just the same as if i were to look on urban dictionary.com

I don’t call it nappy, I say kinky!!!! My hair is kinky!!!!! I am an african american and I wouldn’t change my hair for nothing in the world. I am soooooooo proud of my hair. I hear other blacks telling me to get a perm, but that would never happen. You are right, our hair is extremly curly, it doesn’t always mean that it is hard to comb!!!! Kinky hair is usually strong,thick,and healthy; who wouldn’t want hair like that????

Its kinda on the same lines as a jew fro, Whenever my hair gets too long it starts to form into something that looks like an afro and this point I start to get the inevitable “are you jewish?” question of which I am not. Again its all about the sterotypes.

Sometime before people speak they should really know what they are talking about.Though they may not symbol anything for many ppl today dreads have a meaning to them from when they were originated back in Africa. Many ppl who have dreads keep them groomed there is nothing nappy about them nor is there anything nappy about african american hair. The texture of our hair if beautiful. When blacks get weaves do they walk around asking why does she have weave? she is goin to have lice like a white person.

Why is it that people feel that only a certain group or race is limited to certain things like nappy hair or eating certain foods. The girls sounded ignorant because they are stereotyping that blacks are the only ones who hair gets messed up. Even whites hair gets messed up when they don’t comb or brush it

Today’s society view good hair as being straight and bad hair as nappy, why is this? Like someone stated earlier, black people hair is extremely curly, there is a difference. I was watching the Tyra show one day last year and the whole show was dedicated to hair and trying to get the viewers to understand that just because somebody’s hair isn’t straight doesn’t mean its not good and healthy hair.
If we go back into the day like around the 18th and 19th century whites were considered good and likable including their straight hair. Now in the present majority of the laws compared to the past has changed. African Americans have overcome a lot of things but for some reason the hair thing haven’t changed. People still want straight hair all because back in the day white people’s straight hair was looked at as good hair. That’s where the mistake was, back in the damn day.
