Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

“What would you do?”

with 4 comments

On a “What Would You Do” segment taped in New Jersey, two hispanic customers were having difficulty asking for coffee and what they wanted to eat. Although they were waiting to be served, other customers around them began insulting them, with no desire to help them. They were told comments like “get back in your pickup truck with the rest of your family.” The cashier along with the two main hispanic customers were actors but those surrounding them, offering horrible insults and agreeing with the cashier, were not. This just shows that some people, even other minorities, can be ignorant and make discriminatory comments. Read the article. It is pretty disheartening.

  1. I think that being able to handle certain situations, like helping someone with their order when they cannot speak English, goes back to the type of person you are. If you are a kind person you are going to help out someone no matter what race you are or they are. The fact that these customers refused to help them, and criticized them instead, shows that they are not very kind people, and the fact that they are or are not minorities does not matter.

    • I don’t think there’s any way you can say that race has nothing to do with the way these people were treated. Just the fact that the other customers said things like “get back in your pickup truck with the rest of your family,” an obvious stereotypical and offensive statement, points out the racist motives behind their behavior.

  2. There’s a show on nbc or abc, that makes these scenarios with actors and hidden cameras as a social experiment. One scenario in particular was an African American woman (an actress)goes into a store and just looks around. Then after a couple of minutes, the manager (another actor) starts accusing her of stealing and says he has to pat her down and search her. Out of the 10 people that saw what was happening, only one or two people defended her. Its interesting to see these programs because it gives us a insight into the real America, what people do and how they act in certain situations and most if not all are disappointing.

  3. I agree with you guys that these people who made the outrageous remarks are not only racist but very unkind people. It’s one thing to be impatient but to offer up the racial comments reveals the very bad flaws in their character. It’s a shame that many people have to endure this type of treatment just because some people can’t wait.
