Diversity in Film

with 2 comments

So M. Night Shyamalan is directing the new film “The Last Airbender,” based on the popular Nickelodeon show. The show, which was influenced by Japanese and Chinese culture will have little Asian representation in the movie. The lack of Asian actors for the main characters, who are being portrayed by white actors, has sparked controversy. Shyamalan has a right to artistically craft a film that represents him as a director and appeal to the audience. But, i don’t see how a creating a movie without the asian influence makes sense. I just don’t want the film to go in the direction of Dragon Ball Z’s failure.

  1. Wow I have never heard of this show, but boy what a shame. If this is an Asian show, why not allow asians to represent their culture. I see this a lot in film. I think the media tend to contradict themselves alot of times. It seems as though the media want to show more diversity but many times, it’s only repeating history. This sort of remind me of the whole minstrel shows thing back in the day; white men painting thier faces black acting as if they are African American or something. What a stupid idea. I bet there would be a lot of conflict over this.

  2. Yea, I definetly dont like to see someone faking a culture. It’s like when you watch a movie based in the Bahamas or Jamaica and the actor’s have horrible accents. As a Jamaican-American it not only irritates me but I end up disliking the entire movie good plot or not.
