Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Police Brutality

with 9 comments

Today I read the story of Jordan Miles, an honor student that was viciously attacked by police officers in Pittsburgh. Officers say that they attacked him because he looked suspicious and appeared to be carrying a gun. Miles’ mother believes that the officers racially profiled her son and “assumed he was up to no good because he is black.” Miles wasn’t carrying a weapon, and officers said that the item that was concealed under his shirt was a can of Mountain Dew. Jordan Miles said that he wasn’t carrying anything, and that he doesn’t even drink Mountain Dew. The pictures of Jordan Miles are horrible. Officers ripped out some of his dreads, caused him to have a swollen jaw, numerous bruises, and a black eye that was swollen shut. In my opinion, the officers’ force was excessive, and I see why many people have a hard time trusting police officers who are suppose to protect and serve.

  1. This is horrible. I also have something against racist cops. From personal experience my father has been pulled over for no reason before. My dad takes it all as a good laugh though. He even jokes and says “I got pulled over because I washed my car and I guess it’s illegal for a car to shine. But the beating they gave that boy is unforgivable I hope that cop goes to jail.

  2. This is an outrageous attack. The thing that makes even worse is that police officers are constantly denying the fact that racial profiling does exist. When they officers first pull someone over they make up a violation and when it reaches the media that the stop was an act of racial profiling the entire police department stands behind the officer and says that the department doesn’t tolerate such actions, but nothing is ever done to prevent it from happening again.

  3. That is just crazy! To assume that someone is carrying a gun when he wasn’t and then brutally beat him like that is unacceptable because at any point they could have stopped and look to see if in fact he was carrying a gun, but they didn’t.

  4. Wow! Those pictures look terrible. I don’t care what anybody says, there is racial profiling and its targeted towards young black men! I have witnessed firsthand where police officers have targeted black males just because they were young black males. I don’t know what the solution is to this other than to punish the officers. But will that really solve the problem? We can’t just sit back and allow these things to happen…the lives of our your young black men depend on it!!

  5. How could police officers be so ignorant? First of all, admit that you racially profiled him and apologize. Don’t try to cover it up. Second, why lie about it and try to justify what you know is wrong. Saying that he had a can of mountain dew that never existed is ridiculous. Besides, people have the right to bear arms. You don’t have the right to beat them. ever.

  6. I feel like that type of force was unnecessary especially after noticing that he was armed. They could have killed an innocent young man and I hope the officers are punished for this vicious act.

  7. That is both shocking and scary, in no way, shape or form was it necessary for those officers to do that. As sad as that situation is, it helps often.

  8. OMG! Thats crazy they did that to him. I remember watching a movie one day and this black guy was swarmed by the police because he looked like a suspect in a robbery earlier that day. The black man told them they had the wrong guy and he started to breathe heavily because he had asthma. The police officers had him on the ground. As he reached in his pocket to grab his inhaler, one cop yelled out that the man had a gun. All the officers started shoot him and killed him.

I understand they thought he had a gun but all the cops had to shoot him? They were close to him and im sure they noticed his breathing was abnormal.Even though this was just a movie it happened somewhere before.

  9. How terrible! Even if he did look suspicious they had no right to try and KILL him. There was other ways they could have handled this. I agree with the mother and believe the reason for this horrible beating was because he was black Thinking cops are there to help some of them are misusing their privileges and doing the wrong. Situations like these have always been a problem that need fixing.
