Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

The News

with 2 comments

I recently read an article that talked about negative stereotypes enforced by watching the news;  it was a study at the University of Illinois.  They claimed that there was an over-representation of black criminal offenders and an under-representation of white criminal offenders.  The viewers who watched both network and local news programs apparently had reinforced negative stereotypes towards African Americans.

I personally believe that while yes, African American offenders may be over-represented in the news, there are still reinforced stereotypes towards white criminals as well.  Also, looking at where the study was done: University of Illinois.  The professor grabbed his information and news programming from Chicago.  In Chicago (2005 latest data) 76% of violent crimes were perpetrated by African-Americans,  20% were Hispanic offenders, and 3% white.  Sadly because of this, it seems almost without saying that more black offenders will be seen on the news.

  1. I have heard these statistics before, but in a different study. When people read these statistics they jump to the conclusion that African-Americans are more likely to be criminals than Whites. I do not think this is true whatsoever. African-Americans are not more likely to be criminals, they are just more likely to be caught than a White person. This goes back to the privileges that a White person would get over an African- American, and it is not fair in the least.

  2. I don’t think that’s what the author was trying to say (correct me if I’m wrong); the article wasn’t about black people being more likely to be criminals. It was about black people being more likely to end up on the news for their criminal acts. Also, I agree that if you have a racist police officer, they’re more likely to stop a group of black men than a group of white men, IF both groups of men were selling drugs, the black men would probably be more likely to get caught. However, the article I think the author is referring to is talking solely of aggressive, physical acts of violence.
