Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Scott Baio and Michelle Obama

with 4 comments

So I was watching Chelsea Lately last night and she spoke about Scott Baio and how he posted on Twitter an unflattering picture of Michelle Obama and said “WOW He wakes up to this every morning.” After he did that a bunch of his followers started to call him a racist and writing him death threat, to which all he believes is an overreaction. Did he really believe that people would react otherwise and just laugh at it? Of course not. He is insulting the first lady and the president and he does sound like a racist. He also excused himself by saying that he could never be racist because his wife’s best friend is black. That is totally not an excuse because I guess he doesn’t grasp the fact that he insulted the president of the U.S. and the first lady.

  1. “WOW he wakes up to that every morning” is hardly a racist comment. It is absolutely an insult to our president and our first lady and just incredibly inappropriate all the way around, every way you look at it but one thing it is not, is racist. Had he held up a picture of Anna Nicole Smith and said “WOW, someone woke up to that every morning” it would be rude, insulting and hurtful to the family considering her recent death but no one would call it racist.

  2. Just about ANYTHING anyone says can be misconstrued to be racist. I don’t think it was a racist comment, I think it was more meant to be a joke and of course those who are Obama supporters will get upset, those who aren’t will laugh and think it’s funny and those who do not really feel strongly either way, will not be phased.

  3. I agree that it could be interpreted as a racist comment, however, the same comment has been used for years on various people of all races, including whites. I think that this comment is more of an insult to the First Lady and the President, however it is not against the law and is totally legal under the first amendment. In other times or in other countries a negative comment towards the leader could sometimes land people in jail or death. So while this was an offensive joke or comment aimed at the first lady, it is not racist, just a comment that has been used by comedians time and time again

  4. I didn’t feel like it was a racist comment but more of making light out of a funny face.
