Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Captain America

with 4 comments

Recently there has been some buzz over some speculation that the next big superhero movie would be Captain America who is considered to be one of the lesser known heroes in Marvel’s collection. What has sparked both praise and heated debate though was the idea that Will Smith would be playing the part. Some die hard fans think that it is not a role that a black man should be playing simply because in the comic books Captain America was white, while others think that Will Smith being a great actor would bring charisma to a otherwise corny character. This really links itself to a broader argument in society in which it is sometimes asked if it is appropriate for a minority actor or actress to play a role intended for a white actor. Personally I have no problem with a minority actor playing Captain America, and think that Will Smith would make a fine addition to the ever growing list of comic book movies.

  1. I agree, there is no issue here. I don’t think anyone should have a problem with Will Smith playing Captain America because there is no race issue with Captain America specifically. What I mean by this is that it WOULD be inappropriate for a white woman to play Rosa Parks in a movie about her life because race is a central issue. But seeing as that isn’t the case, people need to get over the skin color thing and realize that Will Smith is a great, funny actor who’ll probably do a better job than most with the character.

  2. Absolutely there shouldn’t be a problem with Will Smith being Captain America. In fact there are many comic series that features a black Captain America. Captain America was never just one person in the comic series anyway. The character’s name is Isaiah Bradley and he IS a black Captain America.

  3. I don’t see a problem with Will Smith playing Captain America because he is a great actor, and he was terrific in Hancock. I think that there are people that oppose Smith being Captain “America” because they associate being American with being White.

  4. There should be no problem. The actor plays a character, it shouldn’t matter if he’s black or white especially if what devaio24 said is true and the Captain America from the comics actually is black. Many of today’s cartoons, like the justice league and the x-men, show Captain America as white and that’s probably why they would disagree to having Will Smith play the role.
