Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Minority Students at UF

with 3 comments

A few friends and I were talking about the difference between highschool and college and the different types of people that a big university like our campus has to offer. One thing that was brought up was the way they viewed certain minority students here. Amongst their beliefs was the idea that the black students, they wondered how did some off them get here. And even I, a black student wondered the same thing. For the general arguement they felt upset that the minority students who they know don”t put forth the effort in school got a “spot” on this campus over a white person would have. It was a really heated debate and people really got upset over the conversation. So I don’t know. Do you feel like a minority student should get picked over a non-minority student because they are a minority, when there a much more “qualified” students black, white, asian, etc?

  1. Being a black student myself, I too have noticed this trend and the comments that people have towards this issue. I am proud to be a student at UF and I know there were many people who had higher test scores, gpa, extracurriculars…etc who did not get in. The reason why they didn’t get in is unknown to me, but the fact is still there. But even though there are black students who are at UF and who many say are undeserving of being here and aren’t proving that they are worthy to attend, there are also white, asian, hispanic…etc students who are in the same boat. Everyone should work to their potential and prove they deserve the spot they received.

  2. I too am an african American uf student. I say that every student dispite of race, sex, or socail background should be choosen for their hard work. Not because they are a minority or white or appeatence period. It is what you bring to the table that matters. I worked very hard to get here black of not, I thank God for this beautiful opportunities!!!

  3. Im Also an African american student, and although universities such as University of florida has to meet a certain quota of their population with minorities, I feel they should be met with minorities who fulfill the requirements. If they don’t meet these requirements then they should not be admitted. (With the acceptions of athletes. Now I will never throw my race under the bus and I do believe all who are admitted do want to be here and have earned their way in.Its not like they just let anbody in the appliations are reviewed and judged percisely.
