Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Television and Social Identity: Race Representation as “White” Accommodation.

Over the past years we have noticed that the media has altered the ways in which race is portrayed. In television, pressures from outside sources have led the media industry to modify characters roles in a non offensive or stereotypical way. We now see blacks portrayed in a positive light and taking on the lead roles. Researchers have suggested that popular, positive portrayals of many Blacks in the media are marketable because they affirm White audience members self concepts as non-racist. They only incorporate such roles just to accommodate societal requests, not because they are concerned about promoting racial equality. Although the media strives to incorporate race in a non bias way they fail because they do not take into account the values minorities hold but rather adjust them in way that conforms to societal norms and expectations. It is hard to claim that one role is positive over the either because chances are not everyone will always agree with what is being portrayed by the media.
