A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Man sentenced for racist Facebook threats

with 6 comments

I found this interesting article worth mentioning. A man named Dyron Hart from New Orleans has been charged with 3 years of probation by a federal judge after threatening to kill African Americans registered on Facebook. “Hart created a fictitious name and used the photograph of a white supremacist to communicate a threat. He then purported to be a person outraged by the election of President Barack Obama when he used a Facebook account on a computer in Poplarville, Mississippi to transmit a threat to an African American student at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The threat indicated that he wanted to kill African American individuals because of the election of the President,” according to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten. Posing as a white supremacist, Hart repeatedly used obscenities and the N-word, and he threatened to kill more than 3,000 black people in a month, court documents say. He warned those who received the message of an attack from a “random white man.” (Luke, 2009)

After reading this article, it made me realize that extra precaution needs to be taken into account when threatening someone over the Internet, especially on Facebook. Why do you suppose that a person like Dyron should target a group of minorities without any real evidence or justification? Do think that our country has become more racially divided ever since we elected Obama as our president?

  1. I think that several Americans are going to have racist thoughts and ever since Obama winning the election has mad me aware that Americans are still racist. This man deserves to be in prison because threats are nothing to joke about.

  2. WOW!!! This is insane!! If the article wasn’t there for evidence I would have not believed it. I’m surprised someone in the political arena didn’t step in sooner since this supremacist targeted some of his threats to the president, but then again, there are many more people out there who hold the same views.

  3. This is sickening and absolutely ridiculous. The only thing I can think that could even come close to explaining Dyron’s actions is that he has an extreme mental illness. I cannot understand how anyone could have such hatred in their heart causing them to want to not only kill someone, but members of a particular race. I pray that one day racism will dissipate, obviously as well as hate/race crimes.

  4. My first thought is only probation? Shows how our US system is defined to react instead of prevent situations from occurring. Since he technically hasn’t done any actions it is only 3 years probation. If someone murders than its prison. Hopefully they have him in a medical clinic or something to change his behavior.

  5. Wow that’s crazy. In my opinion I don’t think America has become more racially divided because of Obama nor has it really sure fire not been.

  6. I think what he did is rather ridiculous. To think that someone is that crazy to make those types of threats towards a certain group is sad. I don’t think that America has become more divided since Obama’s election on the contrary for once I’m happy to see that people looked passed the color of his skin (because apprently the color of someone skin is important)and were able to vote for him because of his values and the faith that people had in him in changing the way things are going in America. I dont understand why people have so much hate inside of them to want to ever threaten or make fun of another race.. When it comes down to it we all come from the same place.
