Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Today’s Reading

with 5 comments

Today’s reading brought up a concept that was foreign to me. The idea of a white “ally” is something that I had never heard of before. Speaking for myself as a minority student here at UF, I don’t want an “ally” or any special treatment because I’m Hispanic. All I want is the same equal treatment Whites give other Whites without any other exceptions. Am I alone in feeling this way?

  1. No you are not. I was wondering what point the author was trying to make and who exactly the author was speaking to. I think it would be so ridiculous for someone to walk around and try to live thinking that racism exists any and everywhere. Someone is liable to drive themselves insane!

  2. While I would agree with both of you on this issue, I think that the point of the reading and the term “ally” has been misconstrued. The author was using the term like an ally in a war among countries. Not that the races are at war, but that many people don’t see or notice the hostile conditions created out there for minorities. The author was simply offering up advice, mostly for white people, on how to prevent this cycle from perpetuating. Therefore, an ally is not a bad thing, or because someone requires help. An ally is there for someone else through the good and the bad, and it just so happened that the author highlighted all bad.

That being said, if you look for racism in everything, then you will surely see it in everything, and that makes for a very meager existence.

  4. Here’s the other side that I think our professor was looking for in class! I kinda wish you would have brought it up in class, would have made for a great discussion! 🙂 I think we need a balance of both views on this topic. Whites don’t need to live their lives assuming all minorities are automatically disadvantaged, but on the other side they should not ignore the possibility that race may contribute to certain disadvantages when relevant.

  5. I think we all want and deserve equal treatment but it is something that is not always going to be granted to everyone in ways we may assume. Our individualistic values in this society have constructed us to believe that most things are attainable yet they also can vary by person.
