A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Coed “Fraternity”

leave a comment »

So my roommate from last year decided to Rush for a coed honors fraternity (I can’t remember the name). She enjoyed the whole process of rushing and pledging, and was super excited for her initiation. She came back to the room that night and told me how excited she was to be a brother. A Brother. I think it’s sexist enough to give a coed organization a male title, but to also make the female members brothers and not sisters struck me as even more unfair. She has no problem being a brother and enjoys being in her frat, so I’m happy for her in that sense. Yet, I can’t help but wonder why a brother-ship is seen as a closer relationship than a sister-ship. I’m not saying it should be called a sorority and the male members called sisters, I just feel that they should come up with gender neutral names and titles.
