Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

late post-last week

The other day i went to the movies to watch the disney movie a christmas carroll. They were promoting the new african american princess movie, which i thought was neat. However, when the movie started i noticed there wasnt a single black person played in the movie. Every single character was white. It made me think is disney only making this new princess movie to not seem racist. If thats not the case, they should start having more diversity through out all there movies.

  1. I think Disney is just trying to appeal to a broader audience, and dispel any rumors of racism at the same time. There have been many allegations that Disney is racist. In a previous sociology class we discussed how the Lion King was racist. I think it’s mostly people only finding what they are looking for, but we should definitely be on the look out for undercurrents of racism in children’s movies because they are so impressionable.

  2. I think in this case, as I’ve said in response to other posts, that in analyzing a film like this for racist themes one must first look at the setting of the film itself. Dickens wrote a Christmas Carol to be in a setting which did not require an African American presence, and the addition of one would make the story historically invalid. Disney is only adhering to the original setting in which the story takes place.
