Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Thanksgiving Day Parade

I noticed an underrepresentation of minorities in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this Thursday. The parade seemed overrun with white people, lacking ethnicity and race differences. I wonder what would cause this. Could it perhaps be attributed to the overwhelming amount of whites that are involved in parade-type activities? Is it purposeful racism? I did notice that there were a couple minority group celebrities in the parade, but these (and a few children) seemed to be the only minority members. As I’m thinking about it, the marching bands did also have some minority members, but not many. The main racism seemed to lie in those who participated in the floats and in pulling/directing the balloons. It would be very interesting to analyze the race and ethnic differences within those in the parade and see if there is any unintentional racism there. Perhaps it is due to the history of the parade and its roots in a mainly white upper class persuasion.
