Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

A Little Optimism

Yesterday was Thanksgiving, a time to look at all that we have and be thankful for it all. When we look at the world, things do not look that great. It is definitely a dismal picture.  In class we can get bogged down in the negative aspects of racial problems and the difficulties that face minorities in America today. This can be very depressing. Especially as the more we talk about the matter the more it seems there is no easy solution or at times no solution at all. So over the holidays I have been thinking that a more optimistic perspective was needed. We all recognize that much distance must still be covered to provide even parity if not equality in America. But often we do not look at how far we have come. A huge distance has been covered. Social changes are very difficult. Changing  a single person’s perspective and how they treat others is difficult enough, multiplying this difficulty over our entire society shows the difficulty. So we must be thankful for the strides that have been made so far. Using this optimism, we must continue to work for equality and move forward. Just trying to see the good side of things during these holiday times.
