Ethnic Pride in Teens

with 5 comments

I just read an article on the site ScienceDaily.com that research has concluded that teens with more ethnic pride (specifically Aftrican Americans) have better mental health.

“These findings imply that ethnic pride is important to African American adolescents’ mental health for other reasons than it simply makes them feel better about themselves as individuals,” according to Jelani Mandara, associate professor of human development and social policy at Northwestern University, who was the study’s lead author. “The findings also imply that ethnic pride may be as important as self-esteem to the mental health of African American adolescents. Parents, schools, and therapists should expose young people to material and environments that help foster a sense of ethnic pride.”

I think this makes complete sense that African American teens that are exposed to material that reflect s their heitage in a positive light will have better mental health.  Of course teens suffer from self esteem issues to begin with but it’s worse if you feel marginalized and constantly reminded that you are the minority.

  1. I agree that ethnic pride can lead to good self esteem, If someone is happy about their heritage then all the negative stereotypes or labels that come from people won’t be taken to heart. Simply looking at oneself positively and being appreciative of all the good things that come from ones background outnumbers all the negative things people may say or think.

  2. Yeah this definitely makes a lot of sense. When you have any kind of pride, you feel good about yourself. When you have ethnic pride in particular, you have a sense of belonging with one particular group, which is crioal to one’s well being because humans are social creatures.

  3. I really like this. I definitely think that being prideful of one’s own heritage allows the person to be more open and free spirited. He/she would not feel inferior or intimidated, since he/she feels accepted in their own group.

  4. I would have never guessed that ethnic pride had anything to do with having better mental health. But after careful analyzation that study would make sense. If a person can feel like they are apart of the bigger picture and is exposed to lots of pride from their “own” people it makes them less intimidated and gives them a sense of belonging.

  5. This does make sense. When you know where you come from, you don’t have any unanswered questions as to why you look the way you do or why people treat you the way they do. When you have pride in your heritage, people don’t have anything to discriminate against.
