Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Darwin a Racist

There is a big to do about the handing out of the The Origin of Species books which contain an introduction by Ray Comfort. The introduction goes into very extreme Christian beliefs, but that is not what interested me the most. I was really interested in the mentioning of how Darwin and his ideas were racist, used by Hitler, and how Darwin had unsavory views of women. The introduction goes into a quotation from the book: “The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilized state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.” This seems to indicate a tie between African Americans and gorillas. However, what the introduction fails to mention is that at the time Darwin lived these thoughts were the social norm. So in a sense Darwin can be argued to be racist and sexist just as many of our founding fathers can. Now another argument that the introduction makes is that Social Darwinism, derived from Darwin’s work, is responsible for elitism, racism, and many other atrocities. Ray Comfort does not realize that Darwin is in no way responsible for how is work is interpreted in the future. Much of Social Darwinism was created after Darwin was dead. The argument that because Hitler twisted Darwin’s work, his ideas are somehow dirtied is completely bogus. The biggest problem I find is the argument that religion and evolution are mutually exclusive. There seems to be this huge conflict where there does not need to be. Passion overrides thought. Both ideas can exist together, actually quite well, but that is another post some other time.

  1. Im going to keep this short, in my opinion, people who bash on Darwin’s theory do it because they are inconsiderate of others. Its mainly the religious people who void his theory, claiming that there is only one way, but in the bible they are taught to 1. never impose their religion on others and 2. that they should treat everything and everything the same way they would like to be treated. By bashing and belittling a person on his belief, they are allowing others to do the same, which im sure they aren’t ok for.

  2. There’s only one thing that matters to most people: that you do what they want. They’ll twist everything they have to in order to find reasons why it will save your soul to do what they tell you to. Science? Obviously false. Just listen to me and you go to heaven!!!
