Perspectives on Race

A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Oprah off the air in 2011

with 3 comments

So today I found out that Oprah will be ending her talk show in 2011. When I first read the article on the New York Times, I thought to myself “awww wow this kind of sucks; it’ll be weird not having her on tv.” Well when I went to another site which had the same article and started reading the comments that people posted I was somewhat appalled. Never before had I heard anyone call Oprah racist but they did. Its so crazy that people claims that her show is only for black people when I have heard black people criticizing her for her lack of black audience members and topics. I have heard of black individuals claiming that over the years her skin color has gotten lighter and her hair has gotten straighter instead of the afro she used to wear in the 80’s. I was quite appalled that she was considered a racist and some people even referred to her as just some black women with a strong distaste. This makes me wonder whether money blurs race and skin color. I mean when can say that it does but it seems to me that soon as anything goes wrong like when a prominent athlete does something which violates the law or anything close to it, people automatically play the race card and/or judge the individual based on them belonging to a certain race group. Regardless of what people say, Oprah has been a very influential women in daytime television in the past 24 years, black or not. Yes the fact can’t be ignored that she is indeed a black women billionaire. Not only is she black but she’s also a women. A women who has overcome a lot to be where she is today; A black women who is the most oppressed minority made it; she is that exception.

  1. I agree 100%. Although Oprah may not be everyone’s favorite person it would be ignorant to try to find fault in her simply because of her race. She has no doubt overcome much to achieve what she has achieved today and for that she should be commended.

  2. It is amazing that anyone would accuse Oprah of being anything but benevolent. However, my point of contention with this post is not about the people in the blogging world who would racialize Oprah, instead my beef is with the fact that she announced that she is leaving T.V. She is leaving her long-running talk show, but starting her own network, so those that love her, don’t fret, you will most definitely see her again after she supposedly leaves.

  3. I feel like, inevitably, there’s always going to be those few people that criticize everything and anything. Oprah is a successful and wealthy black woman that many people are more than likely to be envious and jealous of.
