Couples Retreat

with 7 comments

In Britain, the poster for the movie “Couples Retreat” is different than the one in the U.S. How? It leaves off the black couple. This cut was made to “simplify” the poster. I haven’t watched the movie, but unless this couple has a lot less screen time than the others, then I think it is very unfair to drop them from the poster. Anyways, why would you want to cut out characters for a promotional poster? I would think they would want it to appeal to as many demographics possible. I definitely think this can be seen as a racist decision.

  1. I definitely agree with your opinion. Why would the movie promoter cut of the black couple? I have not seen the movie either, but I have seen the ads for the movie. And by the looks of it i think the movie is more funny with the black couple in it.

  2. Wow, that is crazy! I agree with you that is awfully unfair, especially considering that its not a real excuse. How much more space did the black couple take up. i don’t think that much honestly. Its an unfair circumstance but the movie is only hurting themselves.

  3. I feel that this has been over analyzed, the cut of the characters had more to do with the lack of notoriety of the black actors. Faizon Love and Tasha Smith are not big name actors and one would expect that they would take a backseat to well known actors such as Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman. If you look at the poster that was released in the states, you will see that Faizon and Tasha are in the far back of this poster, almost behind Vince and his female counter part.

  4. Typo: replace Jason Bateman with Jon Favreau in the previous response.

  5. This is ridiculous. I realize that products are marketed differently in various locations due to demographics and psychographics, but to “simplify” the poster by cutting out the black couple is absolutely absurd. I am pretty sure there are multiple options to go about simplifying an ad without perhaps “indirectly” taking the race route.

  6. Wow I don’t even understand why they would do that. I saw the movie and there isn’t as much going on with couple as the others but its not like they have an insignificant role. They’re four guy friends!!! And what does simplifying the poster even mean?!? That is some real BS.

  7. I saw the movie and I think it is crazy that they cut out the black couple. All of the couples had a pretty significant role in the movie. I guess it shows how scoial problems vary between countries
