A Discussion about Events Concerning Race

Blatant racism on High School Advisory Boards

My friend was visiting Gainesville this last weekend and we were talking about different memories from high school. One that was brought up that I had forgotten about was the blatant example of racism that we both witnessed on the Student Advisory Council of our high school a few years ago. A new high school was built in our city which redrew the boundary lines for admittance to the high schools. My old school was going to have a much larger African American population than was already represented at the school. While discussing the FCAT at one of the SAC meetings, one of the adult members said, “With the new demographic coming in, we’re going to see an obvious decline in our test scores.” With the way that she said “demographic” everybody in the room knew that she was referring to the large African American population from a more impoverished part of town coming to our school. I was surprised that somebody could say something like that and get away with it without any questions.
